What is Self-Care?
You’ve probably heard the term before, but if you haven’t self-care is a general term that describes things that you do deliberately to engage positively with your mental, physical, and emotional health. I know it may sound very simple, but it’s easy to forget that from time to time we all need to take a break or a step back from what’s going on around us and just find a little stress relief. Try a couple of these tips every day and you’ll start to notice a change in your wellbeing. Self-care is cumulative, so the more you practice the more positive effects you’ll feel over time.
10 Ways to Practice Self Care
Practice some light exercise every day—even if it’s 20 or 30 minutes: getting a little movement in your body every day is a great way to improve your wellbeing. Try taking a walk, or if you’re more adventurous try a sport or activity you haven’t before. Pro-tip: throw yourself a mini dance party! Put on your favorite three songs and just boogie. You’ll be surprised at how good you’ll feel afterward.
Make sure you sleep enough: Sleep is vital to your health and wellbeing. Healthy sleep affects almost every part of our body. Making sure you get proper sleep can affect growth and stress hormones, the immune system, our appetites, blood pressure, and general health.
Eat healthy foods: Eating smaller portioned meals at regular intervals not only helps boost your metabolism but also keeps your mind and body healthy. Eating a predominantly plant-based diet with lean proteins will make a huge difference in your life.
Write gratitude lists every day: First thing in the morning grab yourself a pad of paper and your favorite pen and take ten minutes to write out a list of the things in your life that you are grateful for. You’ll notice a marked difference in your mood for the rest of the day.
Grab a foot soak and your favorite face mask: Never underestimate the positive effects of a nice hot foot soak and some personal time to lay. Stop by your local pharmacy or Target and grab a nice face mask and treat your skin to some love. You’ll thank yourself afterward, I promise!
Practice Meditation: Find a comfy pillow or have a seat on the carpet and clear your thoughts. Focus on your breathing and let your mind find a peaceful center. Before you begin set a timer for twenty minutes on your phone. Pick your favorite affirmation and repeat it to yourself. Practicing meditation before bedtime can help with falling asleep! Or try it in the morning before your first cup of coffee or tea.
Strengthen your connections: We all need to feel connected to other people for our mental health. Reach out to family and friends and have a visit. If a visit isn’t possible have a phone call, use skype, or a family zoom session. Active connections are important in our lives, don’t neglect them!
Take a hot bath: This is simple and straightforward. Run yourself a hot bath and soak for thirty minutes. Pro-tip: light some candles and use some bath salts or Epsom in the water. You can even play some light music in the background to help relax!
Take a media break: Taking time away from screens in the evening can make a big difference in our mental health. Turn your phone off for an hour and try meditating, reading a book, taking a walk, or even connecting with your partner.
Spend some time clearing clutter: Organizing your bedroom or take time to clear your closet of some old clothes that you don’t wear anymore. Making space for the new in your life can be a liberating process! Plus, you’ll get a sense of where else you need to work on things in your life.
